Cathy HelmanAssociate Attorney, practicing in Appeals, Probate, Estate Planning, Family Law, and Bankruptcy. Also is an Administrative Law Judge Pro Tem with the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings.
Attorney Cathy Helman joined Burke Law Group as an Associate Attorney in 2015. Her practice encompasses the various aspects of law as it relates to individuals and family relationships. She also is a strong advocate for her clients who feel that a family law court decision did not serve justice, and who want that decision appealed to a higher court. Cathy serves part time as an Administrative Law Judge Pro tem of the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings.
Prior to joining BLG, Cathy worked as an attorney at Division III of the Washington State Court of Appeals, clerking for the Honorable Teresa C. Kulik (retired) and the Honorable Robert Lawrence-Berrey. During her four years at the Court of Appeals, she wrote over 150 memorandum to be used as first drafts of court opinions. Cathy conducted in-depth research on family law topics including property and debt distribution, dissolution of committed intimate relationships, modification of parenting plans, de facto parentage, and third-party custody.
Cathy's 4 years of appellate experience, researching and writing law memoranda for appellate court decisions, makes her the right choice to represent you on appeal. During her time working for appellate court judges, her research and legal memoranda were instrumental in numerous appeal courts decisions that established several new precedential areas of case law that influenced all subsequent cases in those areas of litigation.
As an attorney who covers several areas of law the is focused on individuals and families,, Cathy seeks to understand each unique situation and advocate for the best outcome for her client. Every client is different and no resolution will be the same. While the legal process cannot be separated from some conflicts, the process can be made easier with a supportive environment and excellent representation. Taking the time to listen is the key to Cathy's approach.
Cathy graduated cum laude from Gonzaga University School of Law. She completed her undergraduate education at Utah Valley University, graduating summa cum laude.
Outside of the office, Cathy volunteers with the Spokane Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyers Program, helping with the Family Law Advice Clinic and Bankruptcy Information Clinic. She also serves on the Washington State Bar Association Board of Bar Examiners. She has served as a leader for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and a Parent/Teen mediation project.
Cathy likes to travel, garden, and sit in the sunshine. Born and raised just outside of New Orleans, she enjoys visiting her hometown and sharing her Louisiana culture with others. She and her husband have three adult children.
